Please support a new bipartisan handsfree bill for the state of Michigan. According to Michigan State Police statistics, distracted driving resulted in more than 20,000 vehicle crashes in 2017, about twice the number of collisions attributed to drunken driving. Sixty of those crashes resulted in fatalities and just under 5,400 resulted in at least one injury. These numbers are too high for any state, let alone our home state of Michigan. We need to send a clear message to drivers that their focus should be on driving safely and not on communicating, posting social media updates, or texting using a mobile device while operating a motor vehicle. Distracted driving deaths and injuries are increasing year by year and we need to take action now to save lives. 24 other states have already passed hands-free legislation to improve and protect their citizens. Please do your part in making Michigan the 25th state to enact common-sense legislation to help stop distracted driving.
