Please support a new bipartisan handsfree bill for the state of Michigan. According to Michigan State Police statistics, distracted driving resulted in more than 20,000 vehicle crashes in 2017, about twice the number of collisions attributed to drunken driving. Sixty of those crashes resulted in fatalities and just under 5,400 resulted in at least one injury. These numbers are too high for any state, let alone our home state of Michigan. We need to send a clear message to drivers that their focus should be on driving safely and not on communicating, posting social media updates, or texting using a mobile device while operating a motor vehicle. Distracted driving deaths and injuries are increasing year by year and we need to take action now to save lives. 16 other states have already passed hands-free legislation to improve and protect their citizens. Please do your part in making Michigan the 25th state to enact common-sense legislation to help stop distracted driving. Hello, I’m messaging you to let you know that I support a Hands-Free bill in Michigan. I am aware the House bill is not a hands-free bill and that is not acceptable. In order to enforce the law and change the culture of distracted driving, you must pass a hands-free bill for all drivers of all ages. I urge you to amend this bill, so it is hands-free. There is overwhelming public support for a hands-free law and you must act to pass this legislation now. I strongly encourage you to contact Representative Cole and Speaker Wentworth to voice your support for a hands-free law for all drivers in Michigan. This is common-sense legislation and must be passed in this legislative session. Failing to do this simply means you will be letting the people of Michigan down in your duties. It’s time that Michigan has more enforceable, more updated laws around distracted driving to protect the lives of all on our roads. Thank you for your time.
